This fan is great, it oscillates and runs well with just a slight rattle.

Because I will most likely be a design student, this NOS Faber-Castell pencil case was fitting.

Got a fresh cut from mi madre. She's been a hairstylist for years. She did a good job on what I wanted. SGB Blue+Red.

Also scored this vintage fan. The gear box is screwy so if anyone out there has that, I'd gladly take it off your hands.

College has been going well so far. Hopefully I'll develop good study habits!

So this summer has been very unproductive. Haven't worked out like I should, have worked quite a bit though. But when I don't work, I sit around and do nothing.
Anywho, check this DOPE hat they had at a Van Heusen store.

You have GOT to be kidding me. What fat CEO sitting in a chair of the company said, "Hey hipsters are what's cool now so let's name this brand after them! We can even make the logo look hip and scribbly. We can even make the e backwards so it will be even cooler and more hip!"

Needless to say, I didn't waste my money. Nothing against all you hipsters out there:]

Stetson Open Road Clone Reshaped

This is really my first experience on reshaping a hat. I put in a Cattleman's crease which I think turned out decent for my first try.

If you recall, this was the perfect diamond bash that was put in it by a Fedora Lounge member. (I hated to ruin it, but needed to experiment)

Vintage Grey Stetson

I find it kind of funny how my blog mostly was about hair styles/products. Then I discovered fedoras. I'm obviously not a hardcore rockabilly or greaser, but I've always liked that style ever since I can remember. So it varies between greasy hair and suave lids for me. Here's a pic of me before prom.

Prom was fun, and my girlfriend somehow got me to dance with her to such standards as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. I honestly don't know how anyone could like that "music" if you can call it that.

Anyhow, I got a nice vintage Stetson recently, and here's some pics of that.

Very nice, kind of stiff, lots of snap, Royal Stetson quality. The only blemish is a green spot on the back of the brim, which seeped through completely due to the reeded sweatband. It's not pictured, but its also not very noticeable. I believe this to date to late 50s or early 60s. I sold my grey Stetson Pisa, which I posted about a couple months earlier. I prefer the taller, less tapered crown of a vintage hat as opposed to a new one.

This arrived today. Actually I went to pick it up because it required a signature and I missed its arrival yesterday.

Vintage Royal Stetson OR clone. To my understanding, the difference between this and an actual Open Road, is that this doesn't say "The Open Road" on the lining, and is made from rabbit as well, as opposed to beaver alone. I'm pleased with it though. I got it from a member of the Fedora Lounge, and most of the pictures are also his. The hat is pretty pristine, aside from a small mark on the lining. Now it's time to save my money, and sell some hats.

The Day 02/13

Drove to church today. I convinced my dad to wear one of my fedoras, the brown Steven Stratton, to be exact.

The dude looked sharp man, sharp. He normally has as much style as a Wal-Mart catalog, so it was a major step up. If only I could convince him to wear them more often.

I chilled in the back with my Stetson Pisa.

I put a diamond bash in it, no steam, and worked pretty well, for being originally bashed with a factory standard fedora style. It's a new hat, so it's pretty dang stiff.

I messed around with the brim being flat, as I've seen a lot of older photos with people out and about wearing a flat brim.

We also went to a mall in Story City, and they had old pictures on the wall, probably from the 70s. You can barely make out this old, lonely fedora wearer. Thought it was kinda funny.

We proceeded to Wal-Mart. Check this bear out, just chillin with the pasta sauce, not a care in the world. I got a few stares at my fedora. One in particular was this Mexican dude with a mohawk and two gold earrings. He kept saying somethin to his buddy and pointed to his head, and then his pal looked at me, and then they walked off.

And I gotta tell ya, I'm pretty freakin sick of it. I want it to be nice and warm; good skating weather. I miss skating.. I could drive like 30 miles to an indoor park that's really nice, but I'd rather not spend the gas $$ that I can use on other odds and ends.

My lunch today was this. Yes kids, it's a salad. Raw food ftw is all I have to say. Type in raw food diet on YouTube and prepare to have your mind blown.

Wore my Steven Stratton in public for the first time. One dude in a stocking cap said to me, "It's too warm to be wearing that hat." I just laughed because it made absolutely no sense.

Went to this place called Tasty Tacos in Ankeny. It was pretty good stuff man. Saw a dude with a sick greased up side part-first one I've seen in my region. Saw another dude with a nice western hat. I still need to get some hat brushes ordered and what not. Some new grease too. And of course, more hats. That's why I'm workin tonight huh? Starting this summer, most of the money I make will go for college, so I'm taking advantage while I can.

My slickback I did before work last night. Think I might just leave my hair dry though because I really don't want to get any grease in my nice hat. Peace.

Not much has happened these past few days. I ordered some items online though, and I'll post when I recieve them. It's weird though, because I don't consider myself materialistic. I suppose I'm not though, because I don't care about stuff I get, I'm just fortunate to be able to spend money on things right now. If all my hats and clothes burned in a fire, I would be like "Man that sucks, I spent a lot of money on that stuff, oh well." It wouldn't destroy me. My soul isn't intent on material things that will not last, and that moths can eat away (no pun intended, you hat people).

The new lid I ordered from Panama Bob came in today. At a total of $30+shipping, it is worth it.

I'm pleased with it, though I am more of a long oval so it doesn't fit perfectly.

May just leave the brim up, I kind of like it for a change. If only it wasn't 30 degrees out.

Boring. The hair varied though. Used an assortment of products. Brylcreem, Tres Flores, RC Pomade and Hairdressing. Anymore if I wash it all out of my hair and don't grease up, my hair is like poofy and weird looking. Just saying.

Slicked back most of the day. This was before I added a decent amount of RC. To people who say it looks weird or bad, I say look at the lead stars of the movie Inception (make sure to click it to see in detail):

Leo and Joseph both have slick hair. The dude in the middle's got a nice side part as well, so it can't be that outlandish.

Pomp attempt #2. Close, but the front needs to be longer.

Went to Des Moines today to check out a few antique stores. It was pretty fun, aside from being pressed for time due to the fact that I had to work later in the day. Found one or two cool hats but they weren't in my size of course.

First purchase off of Ebay. Not sure if I really got a great deal or not. About $80. Dealer claimed it was late 50s early 60s. 2 3/4" brim and 5" crown I believe. Can't wait for it to arrive.

Probably a bit of reshaping to do on the brim. Hopefully I can figure that out.

Haven't posted lately. Mostly because I have been on Ebay. But here's some pics I took.

First time trying Vitalis. Not very impressed. Smells almost like Germ-X. The only reason I like it is because of the decent shine.

That's my small current collection. The only ones that you can't see are Tres Flores and two small Crew pomade and fiber samples. My favorites are Dax, RCHD, Brylcreem.

I feel like my hair's been looking decent. Still been side parting it.. mostly because I haven't used the stronger pomades. I haven't been trying anything new with my hair because I've been wearing hats lately (fedoras) and I have work so I need it to look nice. Don't want to try a pomp and walk into work. People's reactions would be horrifying.

First I gotta tell you, yesterday at work I saw some dude with what looked like a nice fedora. It was a dark green color and I asked him where he got it. He said he got it in Des Moines. I was like, "I just got one from there recently." He asked me where and I told him Classic Hats For Men. He said he got his from there too. Well of course I knew that, because it was a nice one, unlike others I see guys wearing. He didn't know what brand it was when I asked him, but he looked inside the hat and Borsalino was written inside. Righteous. Also, it's only older dudes I see wearing fedoras. I'm trying to bring em back I guess.

Gnar waves

A dab of Brylcreem today. Decided to wear my Stetson so there was no point in putting a bunch of grease in my hair. I don't know if it would hurt the hat much, but I'd rather not take my chances.

After this, my friend and I went to Borders and Best Buy to see if I could find any Buddy Holly. Nope. So we went to Walmart and I got the Best of Buddy Holly.

I almost bought Boy Meets World: Seasons One & Two. Only like $20! But I held off on that and instead I also bought some cheap imitation leather gloves and this:

When we were about to leave, a random guy came up to me and asked me where I got my fedora. He was like, "Yeah this is really random, but that's a nice hat, where'd you get your fedora?" Dude looked about late 20s and not creepy or anything. Told him Classic Hats For Men of course. So it was cool to get a compliment on it like, the first time I've worn it in public.

Wore this tonight when I went out to eat with the family. It's a pretty lengthy overcoat.

My mom had been a hair stylist for like 20+ years, and I needed a trim tonight. I told her I wanted a taper on the sides since I'm growing my hair on top for a pomp. It worked out pretty decently. This is what I did after taking a shower. Put in some V05 and Wildroot. Light stuff because I didn't wanna get my pillow greasier tonight.

Kind of a pomp, kind of a quiff, I don't know. Let's not get too technical. This was just the demo round.

I've played a lot of this, but haven't touched it lately. Might get back into it.

So that's basically my day, aside from little things I have to do here and there. Need to study for an art test tomorrow and do stuff around the house, but that's about it.

A Steal

The other night I came across a very nice hat. Size 7 1/4, though I'm a 7 3/8 long oval. It was part of a small collection of her grandfathers (the woman was probably mid-40s). When I saw the look of it and price, I had to jump on it. Unfortunately, I had a very long assignment to work on today, so I didn't have the chance, but my parents did. They were already going to be in that area, so I asked them for a rare favor to see if they could get it for me, and they did!

Very ironic that it's Ames Iowa. The right initials are ERW.

I'm super happy to have this vintage Hopkins straw. The woman said that her grandfather loved his hats and took excellent care of them. By the condition of this one, I can approve that. Not sure about the date, and as of now, I don't know much about this company. Hopefully someone on The Lounge can tell me more.

Two new hats in two days. I am a happy camper.

New Fedora

Saturday I took a trip to Des Moines, going to two places: The Atomic Garage and Classic Hats for Men.

The Atomic garage was pretty sweet. It was full of vintage clothing from I'd say the 40s on up. They had some cool records too. I looked around and found some sweet things including a perfecto style leather jacket (rent only), cool 50s style shirts, pants and blazers. Cool place, but expensive stuff. The real good stuff was for rent only so I decided to hold off on buying anything.

So then it was off to Classic Hats for Men. This shop is on the bottom level of a Victorian style house and it was pretty sweet, first time I'd been there. I was greeted at the door by Judy McClure. She was super nice and helpful. They had a lot of hats, nice hats. Fedoras, caps, etc. I walked in wearing my Scala Hyde Park and she commented that she always likes when people walk in wearing their favorite hat!

She measured my head size and then proceeded to find some hats that she had in her inventory. The first one I tried on was a Stetson Pisa. I liked it right away. Fit pretty good + some added padding. 7 3/8 with a 2" brim. I originally wanted a 2 1/4" brim, but I quickly decided that 2" looked best. I tried some other very expensive Italian made hats. One was a Dobbs, another was a Stetson, another was Borsalino I think. I remember her mentioning Biltmore hats as well. These are all very nice, but very pricey. I tried one on that was $256. Not exactly the price I was looking to pay for my first quality hat. There was one hat that stuck out though. The first hat I tried on. At 90 bucks a pop, it was about the top price I was willing to pay that day. So I bought the Stetson Pisa.

I think it looks pretty decent on me, but that's because it's my own hat haha.

I'm very happy with this hat thus far. I'm also very happy with Judy's awesome service.

I bought some V05 today to try out. I did a little research and found that it is a classic product originally intended for movie stars with damaged scalps and such.

Now, upon opening the lid, the pressure made the dressing ooze out all over.. yeah not good. It's because I squeezed the bottom of the tube beforehand, not thinking. So what did I do? I lathered that grease on my hair. My already rather greasy hair. This is a new level that I can't say I really wanted to go, but I guess you can never get too greasy. Now you could probably see your reflection in my hair. It smells like a strong ointment that I can't describe, not a very good smell :/

That's not grey hair, That's grease. Didn't want to take it out and mess my hair up because I have to work soon.

Ehh, if anyone questions me, I'll just say I'm going for the Don Draper look. Respectable Mad Men character right?

The 'Do 01/06

Last night I washed a lot of pomade out of my hair, and this morning I didn't have time before going to school to do anything with my hair so it looked like this. This kid goes, "Hey your hair's not as greasy today." and I go, "Yeah it's too bad isn't it?"

But man was it shiny. Anyway, I came home later and put some Dax, RC, Wildroot and tiny bit of Brylcreem that would hopefully cover up the Wildroot smell, realizing it's not the most amazing smell in the world. Man I need to get some Sweet Georgia Brown.. Anyway, it turned out alright but it took me forever.


Looks pretty wet.. too bad this style isn't in..

Kids These Days

I saw some kid yo-yoing in the hallway today. Now yo-yoing is awesome, I happen to know some sweet moves myself (i.e. double or nothing, mach 5, doctor strange, etc.). The kid was a geeky looking kid with glasses (not to make any stereotypes), but he had like high water pants and a green sweater that looked like his mom picked out for him. But i don't care about that, it's fine with me. What got to me was our little conversation.
I go, "Hey man, can you do any tricks with your yo-yo?"
Kid goes, "No!" and proceeds to quickly walk away, like he was pissed off at me.
What a douche, I mean I asked nicely because I'm a nice kid by nature. But the poindexter had an attitude. This is why those kids have no friends. Not because they are nerdy, but because they are mean.

I have two other examples. A couple years ago, my friend and I at our old school were very popular. Now one day we decided to be nice and sit at a table full of "squares".
We're like, "Hey guys how are you doing?" ya know, just making pleasant conversation.
They all looked at us and said some crude remarks like, "What are you doing here, go away!"
I can't remember because this was like five years ago.

The other example I have is of this kid at my current school. Don't know his name, but he wears high water blue jeans, walmart shoes, glasses, pencil in his ear, backpack looks like it has pillows in it and is as heavy as bricks. One of those kids. I tried to have a pleasant conversation with him but every point I made he shot it down and was a complete douche. I can't remember the dialogue on this one, but the kid was an arse.

My point is, is that these kids should be nice and respect people's opinions if they want to make some friends, because the stereotypical nerds don't have friends. In reality, they tend to be mean, at least the ones I've come across. Now I don't know them personally, they might have great lives and many friends, but I thought I would state my findings on this current issue.

The 'Do 01/05

Today, I put a small coat of Dax on top and some RC on the sides and top. I didn't realize how greasy/shiny RC really is until today. The lighting in this picture demonstrates it pretty awesomely.

Ahh yeah, that's the shine I'm talkin about. I blinded two kids walkin in the hall.

This other picture is to kind of show the side, whatevs.

Still the only greaser at my school, but my friends keep saying they're gonna grease up again, but they don't have the balls to. That's what I assume anyway.. actually I'm kidding they just don't understand that it's just so awesome. I got another compliment today, or two, I can't remember.. Someone always has something to say about it because I'm so out of place at my school (and my town). It's okay with me though.

New Jacket

I got a new jacket last weekend. Well technically it's an old jacket, check it out.

I got it at salvation army. It's like an old letterman jacket, and it's XL. I can still wear it though! The back is the coolest part though:

Aces was an old bar in Iowa that burnt down apparently. I'm not quite sure how old this jacket is but it feels pretty legit when I wear it. I've gotten numerous compliments on it, mostly from my friends. They aren't greasers, I'm the only one at my school. It keeps me decently warm in these freezing cold winters. I am now one step closer to attaining a leather jacket, preferably a Schott Perfecto. Unfortunately I can't find any around here, nor can I afford a brand new one. We'll see what happens there.

The 'Do 01/04

Today all I did was put a layer of Brylcreem over the leftover RC and Dax that was in my hair from yesterday. Had to keep it lookin' fresh ya know?

Got a nice compliment today by my friends older sister. She told me she wished her brother would grease his hair and that more people would. Sweet! Can't wait till my hair gets long enough to do a full pomp though. With time, with time.

Just a short post of how I did my hair today. Used mainly Royal Crown Hair Dressing, and Dax Wave & Groom.

I like the hold of Dax for the back and the Shine of RC.

Went with a similar style as yesterday, keeping my natural wave in front.

Wild at Heart

So my family and I took a trip to a town about 10 miles away, to see my grandparents in the nursing home. It was a good get-together, aside from the fact that my grandpa can't remember any of his awesome stories from back in the day (he had a lot, and was good at telling them too). Anyway on the way home, I said we should stop in the Walgreens there to see if they have any pomades. What I found was a generic assortment under the ethnic hair section consisting mostly of gels. Not my cup of tea. I go greasy. They had some Murray's but that was it. Of course I already have some. I went to the men's shaving section or whatever you call it and found the usual products: Brylcreem, Groom&Clean, Vitalis, VO5, etc. I did manage to find this though, which I hadn't seen in my home town.

Now I don't know if I can really do the product justice after only one use, but I do have my opinions about it thus far. It's the same color as Brylcreem but it's more of a liquid consistency. Upon application, it slicks the same. Normally when I use other products, I put them in after I shower and my hair straightens out, depending on how much I put in. Today though, I decided to try this soon after I bought it. I had my thick hair combed to the side and didn't have any time this morning to do anything with it, so my natural wave was revealed.

I like Wildroot because it preserved my wave and does have a good shine, comparable to Brylcreem. Different smell though, didn't like it at first, but it grew on me. I find grease to be that way.

This has a very light hold for me, probably about the same as Brylcreem. Here's another view:

So that's my take on Wildroot thus far. I will probably continue to use it at random times that I deem appropriate.

First Fedora

Hey gotta start somewhere right? Just got this at JCPenny's. It was on sale for like $20 so I had to get it. I'd been into the 50s business look for quite sometime and just now got a hat. It's a Scala Hyde Park crushable with a 2 1/2" brim. Might be a little bit wide of a brim for me..

The coat I'm wearing is one that my grandpa gave to me. He said he bought it in the late 60s or 70s. Might be a tiny bit big but still works. It's a long overcoat and I don't know if I'd wear it in public due to the fact that people will probably see me and be like, "What's wrong with that kid?" Too bad this isn't 1955 when it was commonplace.

I'm still trying to find out which brim length I like best and which one would fit me the best. It's hard though because I don't think I can find any sweet fedoras where I live.
